Engineering Graphics is unlike every other subject in FE engineering. You cannot read your way to a good score in it. You cannot memorise your way to one. The only currency that matters in EG is the number of drawings you have done by the time you sit in the exam hall.

Students who have drawn 40–50 projections before the ESE typically finish the paper in under 2.5 hours, check their work, and walk out confident. Students who have drawn 5–6 often run out of time midway through.

The SPPU Engineering Graphics Syllabus

SPPU Engineering Graphics covers: Projection of Points, Projection of Lines (inclined to one or both planes), Projection of Planes, Projection of Solids (prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones), Sections of Solids, Development of Surfaces, Isometric Projections, and Three-View Orthographic Projections.

The ESE paper typically asks 5–6 questions covering different topics. Each question requires a neat, complete, correctly-labelled drawing. Partial drawings with missing labels lose marks even if the geometry is correct.

The Right Preparation Order

Start with Projection of Points. Every other topic in EG builds on this. Spend a full week on just this topic — enough problems until you can position a point in any quadrant or on any plane without hesitation.

Projection of Lines comes next. Lines inclined to one plane are easier. Lines inclined to both planes are harder and require more practice. Do not rush this topic. Once Lines are solid, Planes and Solids become much more approachable.

Solids need repetition, not variety. Rather than doing one problem of each solid type, take one solid (say, a cylinder cut by an oblique plane) and draw it 5–6 times with different dimensions. The approach becomes automatic before you move to the next solid type.

Sections and Development of Surfaces are often where marks are dropped. Students know the concept but rush the drawing and miss labels. Practice these with proper labels from the first attempt — never draw without labelling.

Standards Matter for Marks

SPPU EG examiners check for: correct projection method, accurate geometry, proper line types (visible, hidden, construction), and complete labelling (Top View, Front View, Side View, True Shape, etc.). Missing labels on an otherwise correct drawing can cost 2–4 marks per question.

Use proper instruments. A mini-drafter or a good set square + compass makes lines cleaner and drawings faster. If you are practicing at home with a rough notebook, your drawings will look rough in the exam. Practice on drawing sheets, the way you will in the ESE.

Time Yourself from Month 4 Onwards

Each question in the ESE should take 25–35 minutes. If you are taking 50 minutes per problem, you need more drawing practice — not more theory reading. Start timing yourself at least a month before the exam.

Work through full past SPPU EG papers in 3 hours. All 5 questions, complete drawings. This builds the pace needed for the actual exam.
