Overview of FE Engineering Under SPPU

First Year Engineering (FE) under Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is a common year — meaning all branches study roughly the same subjects regardless of whether you are in Civil, Mechanical, IT, Computer, Electronics, or any other branch. This common foundation is what FE is all about.

Subject 1: Engineering Mathematics 1 (M-I)

The first of three engineering maths papers. M-I covers Matrices, Differential Calculus, Partial Differentiation, and Differential Equations. It extends Class 12 Maths significantly and sets the foundation for M-II and all engineering-related mathematics in later semesters.

Subject 2: Engineering Mathematics 2 (M-II)

Studied in Semester 2. M-II introduces Laplace Transform, Fourier Series, Multiple Integration, and Vector Calculus. These are tools that electrical, mechanical and civil engineers use throughout their careers. M-II is widely considered the hardest Maths paper in FE.

Subject 3: Engineering Physics

Engineering Physics covers topics like Quantum Mechanics, Wave Optics, Semiconductors, Electrodynamics, and Superconductivity. It is more conceptual than Class 12 Physics, with numericals that require formula application rather than derivation from first principles.

Subject 4: Engineering Chemistry

Engineering Chemistry covers topics relevant to engineering materials and processes — Water Treatment, Polymers, Corrosion, Electrochemistry, Fuels, and Lubricants. It has both theory and numericals. Many students underestimate it and get caught off-guard in ESE.

Subject 5: Engineering Mechanics

Engineering Mechanics (EM) covers Statics (forces, equilibrium, friction, trusses) and Dynamics (kinematics, kinetics). It is an almost entirely numerical subject. This is one of the subjects where daily practice makes the biggest difference in final marks.

Subject 6: Engineering Graphics (EG)

Engineering Graphics is a drawing subject — the only one in FE. It teaches students to represent 3D objects in 2D through orthographic and isometric projections. This is a fundamental engineering skill used by every engineer for technical drawings and CAD work.

Subject 7: Basic Electrical Engineering (BEE)

BEE introduces electrical circuits, AC and DC analysis, transformers, motors, and generators at a foundational level. Students from non-electrical branches will encounter more complex versions of these topics in their branch-specific subjects later.

Subject 8: Basic Electronics Engineering (BEL)

BEL covers electronic components, diodes, transistors, op-amps, and digital electronics fundamentals. Like BEE, this is a foundation subject that becomes important in every branch in different ways.
