The Truth About First Year Engineering
First year engineering (FE) is the year that sets the tone for your entire engineering journey. Students who figure out the right approach in FE carry that discipline forward. Students who don't often end up with backlogs, low SGPA, and a stressful 4 years.
After coaching hundreds of FE students in Nashik, our faculty at Joshi's Classes has seen the same mistakes come up again and again. Here are the most common ones — and exactly how to avoid them.
Mistake 1: Skipping Internal Exams (ISE/MSE)
This is the biggest mistake. Internal exams carry significant weightage in your final SPPU result. Many students treat MSE casually because it is "just an internal" — and then realise at the end of the semester that their internal marks pulled their SGPA down even though their ESE performance was decent.
Fix: Treat every MSE and ISE like a mini-semester exam. Prepare the same way you would for ESE for that portion of the syllabus.
Mistake 2: Not Practicing Maths Problems Daily
Engineering Mathematics (M-I and M-II in FE) is not a subject you can study passively. Reading notes does not prepare you for SPPU Maths papers. You need to solve problems daily.
Fix: Minimum 10 Maths problems every day throughout the semester, not just before exams. This sounds like a lot — but 10 problems takes 30–40 minutes if you are consistent.
Mistake 3: Ignoring Engineering Graphics
Engineering Graphics has no shortcut. The skills involved — projection of points, lines, planes, solids — require hand practice. Students who read theory without drawing on paper consistently underperform.
Fix: Practice at least one full drawing every 2–3 days. Use a proper drawing board. Time yourself.
Mistake 4: Studying All Subjects Equally
Students often spread time equally across all subjects, even though not all subjects need equal attention. In FE, Maths and Mechanics typically need more daily practice time. Physics and Chemistry need revision cycles. BEE/BEL need circuit problem practice.
Fix: Allocate study time based on what the subject demands, not by dividing hours equally.
Mistake 5: Waiting Too Long to Ask for Help
Many FE students fall behind in a subject in Month 1 or 2, do not ask for help, and let the gap grow until it is very hard to catch up. By Month 4, they are so far behind that even coaching cannot help them fully recover before ESE.
Fix: If you don't understand something after 2–3 attempts, ask — your faculty, a senior, or join a coaching class. The earlier you address a gap, the easier it is to close.
Mistake 6: No Revision System
FE students learn Unit 1 in Month 1, then completely forget it by Month 4 when they are studying Unit 5. This means ESE revision feels like studying everything from scratch.
Fix: Revise old units briefly once a week. Even 30 minutes every Sunday reviewing the previous month's topics keeps it fresh.
